Application of Self-potential Measurements to Geothermal Reservoir Engineering: Characterization of Fractured Reservoirs

چکیده
An “EKP-postprocessor” computational tool was developed several years ago to calculate space/time distributions of electrokinetic potentials resulting from histories of underground conditions (pressure, temperature, liquid-phase saturation, concentration of dissolved species, etc.) computed by unsteady multidimensional geothermal reservoir simulations (Ishido and Pritchett, 1996). Since that time, the postprocessor has been applied to various geothermal reservoir engineering problems. The results of numerical simulation calculations to study the possibility of characterizing fractured reservoirs using a combination of pressure and self-potential transient data are presented in this paper.

Characterization of Fractured Reservoirs Using Continuous Self-potential Measurements
We have extended our “EKP-postprocessor” (Ishido and Pritchett, 1996) to calculate electrokinetic potentials in fractured geothermal reservoirs that are represented computationally as “MINC” doubleporosity media. In such reservoir descriptions, global mass exchange between adjacent macroscopic computational grid blocks takes place mainly through the “fracture zone”. Inter-block flow through the...
متن کاملUpdated Methods for Estimating Recovery Factors for Geothermal Resources
An important aspect of geothermal resource assessment methodology is the development of geothermal resource models consistent with the production histories of exploited geothermal fields. The primary method applied in past United States Geological Survey (USGS) assessments was the volume method, in which the recoverable heat is estimated from the thermal energy available in a reservoir of unifo...
متن کاملApplication of Decline Analysis in Fractured Reservoirs, Field Case Studies
Decline curve analysis has some advantages over transient well test analysis in which it is not required to shut-in the well and also wellbore storage effects do not exist. Few studies have been done on decline curve analysis of naturally fractured reservoirs but there are even some limitations with available models. On the other hand well test could be expensive and in some operational conditi...
متن کاملModeling Fluid Flow and Electrical Resistivity in Fractured Geothermal Reservoir Rocks
Phase change of pore fluid (boiling/condensing) in rock cores under conditions representative of geothermal reservoirs results in alterations of the electrical resistivity of the samples. In fractured samples, phase change can result in resistivity changes that are more than an order of magnitude greater than those measured in intact samples. These results suggest that electrical resistivity mo...
متن کاملApplication of Decline Curve Analysis for Estimating Different Properties of Closed Fractured Reservoirs for Vertical Wells
In this paper, decline curve analysis is used for estimating different parameters of bounded naturally fractured reservoirs. This analysis technique is based on rate transient technique, and it is shown that if production rate is plotted against time on a semi-log graph, straight lines are obtained that can be used to determine important parameters of the closed fractured reservoirs. The equati...
